Masterclass Preparation Program

Tourist Masterclass Curriculum

Structured preparation for leading group experiences on location

Running a tourist masterclass takes more than subject knowledge. Participants need to manage group dynamics, adapt to unpredictable field conditions, and communicate clearly across language and cultural differences - often simultaneously. This program addresses those specific demands in a structured, practical sequence.

Six focused modules

Each module targets a distinct skill area. They build on each other but can also be taken selectively depending on where your current gaps are. The sequence moves from preparation and planning through to live delivery and post-session review.

Module 01

Site Research and Context

How to gather reliable information about a location - historical, ecological, or cultural - and organise it into a format that supports real-time delivery without reading from notes.

Module 02

Itinerary Design

Building a session flow that accounts for group pace, physical access, weather contingencies, and the natural attention curve of participants over 2–4 hour sessions.

Module 03

Group Communication

Techniques for speaking to mixed-language groups, managing different levels of prior knowledge in the same session, and maintaining engagement without dominating the experience.

Module 04

Cultural Sensitivity in Practice

Specific scenarios where cultural assumptions create friction - and how to identify and address them before they affect the group. Includes case examples from 14 different destination types.

Modules 05 – 06

Live Delivery and Post-Session Review

Field simulation exercises followed by structured debriefs. Module 05 covers in-session adaptation - handling interruptions, questions outside your scope, and safety-related decisions. Module 06 focuses on reviewing your own performance using a repeatable self-assessment method, so each session informs the next.

Program Timeline

How the program unfolds

The full program runs across 12 weeks with a combination of self-paced study and scheduled live sessions. Participants typically spend 4–6 hours per week on coursework. The pace is deliberate - skills need time to settle between sessions.

Weeks 1–2 Orientation and Site Research Introduction to program structure, research methodology, and your first site brief assignment.
Weeks 3–5 Planning and Communication Modules Itinerary design workshop, group communication techniques, and peer review of session plans.
Weeks 6–8 Cultural Context and Edge Cases Case study analysis, cultural sensitivity frameworks, and scenario-based written exercises.
Weeks 9–12 Live Simulation and Final Review Recorded delivery sessions, instructor feedback, and a structured self-assessment framework you keep after the program ends.

Program Instructors

Three working practitioners

Portrait of Tarquin Bellweather, lead instructor for site research and itinerary design

Tarquin Bellweather

Site Research & Itinerary Design

Tarquin has led guided programmes across Central Asia, the Balkans, and coastal West Africa over the past 11 years. His focus is on how instructors build reliable content from unreliable sources - a practical problem most programmes skip entirely. He wrote the site research framework used in Modules 01 and 02.

Portrait of Solange Vreeland, instructor for group communication and cultural sensitivity

Solange Vreeland

Group Communication & Cultural Context

Solange spent eight years delivering heritage interpretation programmes for mixed-language visitor groups at UNESCO-listed sites in Southern Europe and Southeast Asia. She developed the cultural friction case library used in Module 04, drawing from documented incidents rather than theoretical models.

Portrait of Oisín Farragher, instructor for live delivery and post-session review

Oisín Farragher

Live Delivery & Session Review

Oisín trains field guides and tour leaders on delivery technique - specifically how to recover mid-session when plans break down. Before joining Exclusiveofferclub in 2020, he worked as a performance coach for outdoor education providers across Ireland, Scotland, and New Zealand.
